You don't need any enclosures for the drive, just plug in and turn on. I would give this adapter 5 stars, but for one reason. It puts the drive to sleep far too quickly. While I like the idea of the sleep mode, the product needs a software tool to adjust when or if the drive should sleep.Specifically when attached to a Mac, the sleep mode is extremely slow to resume. It takes at least 2-3 minutes for the drive to become available on a Mac after waking from sleep mode. On Windows, just as soon as the drive is done spinning up, it's back online. So on Windows, it's not nearly as bad as on a Mac. Hence, the 4 star rating. As long as you're willing to deal with the rapid sleep mode and the slow restart after sleeping when on a Mac, then this is a great little adapter. Note that some of these types of adapters don't support larger than 2TB drives. This adapter handles 3TB...
